AU CHARACTER NAME: Masaki Kurosaki (First name, Last name)
AGE: 25
GRADE: Graduate Student
AU BACKSTORY:
(For the most part, Masaki's history is going to follow canon pretty closely with only some small deviations for setting reasons. The post-death portion of it, however, is completely divergent.)
In the late 1970s, Masaki was born into the Quincy clan, a spirit-hunting clan that consisted entirely of Candles and their descendents. It was their job to hunt down corrupt spirits and the blighted-ridden daemons that created them. Her parents were both Candles, which put them in higher esteem with the clan than their non-Candle counterparts. Despite this, her parents were kind people, and Masaki enjoyed a happy childhood... up until the day her parents were killed. It was always a hazard of their job, but Masaki never imagined that both her parents would die to the same daemon when she was only 15 years old. In the wake of such a tragedy, she was sent to live with the Ishida family, another branch of the Quincy clan. The Ishida matriarch was a very stern woman, often criticizing Masaki for being such a late-blooming Candle and reminding her regularly of her duty to the clan. Her son Ryuuken was also tactiturn, but showed Masaki a great deal more concern than his mother. Over time, they grew to be close friends--though not close enough for Masaki to confide in him about her grief or the intense loneliness she felt living in his home.
When Masaki was seventeen, she witnessed a daemon fighting with a Shinigami--a rival hunter clan that was bent on dealing with the same crisis as the Quincy but with vastly different philosophies. Neither clan had any kindness to spare for the other, but Masaki couldn't walk away and leave the man to be torn apart. When she intervened, the daemon was too quick for her, so she offered herself as bait to lure it closer. As it bit and latched onto her, Masaki unleashed her Radiance on it, killing it instantly.
However, what Masaki didn't expect was for the creature to erupt with blight magic upon its death. It very well might have killed her, had the Shinigami not dove in to shield her at the last second. In the aftermath of saving each other's lives, Masaki healed the Shinigami of his injuries, while the Shinigami questioned Masaki about her abilities. Against the advice of her, Masaki admitted that she was from the Quincy clan. Rather than treat her as an enemy, the Shinigami laughed and told her it was an honor to meet her. Her fears eased, and she parted from the Shinigami--Isshin--with a hope that maybe their two clans might be able to find common ground one day.
She returned to the Ishida household that evening, but a day later collapsed from an unknown illness. Not knowing what to do, Ryuuken took her to find help--and ran into Isshin. Tensions were high between the two of them, but the need for help was greater. Ryuuken agreed to follow him to a friend that could supposedly help her. It was there that they learned Masaki had been infected by the blighted daemon that had bit her. A part of its essense had latched onto and merged with her soul--and the blight was slowly killing her. In a bid to save her life, Isshin agreed to a magical contract that would stablize and balance the blight with Masaki's own Radiance--at the cost of Isshin's magic.
The contract allowed Masaki to live, and even to continue her daemon-hunting as she had before... But the Ishida house was unconvinced of her recovery. To them, she was still 'tainted' by the blight, and therefore unfit to be part of the Quincy clan. It was heavily implied that leaving would be the best for everyone, and Masaki took the hint with mixed feelings.
While being cast out of the Quincy clan was upsetting, it also allowed her to truly begin living her life for herself. She was still a Quincy at heart, and her powers were stronger than ever, but hunting spirits and daemons was now only one facet of her life. She decided to go to college, visited Isshin frequently, and over time fell in love with him. They got married and started a family of their own--with a little boy and two twins girls.
As the years passed, Masaki's abilities grew even more powerful, moreso than Isshin expected them to. It was almost as if they were drawing on some other source of power, and he suspected that it had something to do with the blight she had absorbed. But he said nothing to his wife about it. She was able to live a happy, normal life; and that's all he wanted for her.
For years, Masaki balanced being a mother and a part-time nurse by day and hunting blighted daemons by night. Despite no longer being part of the Quincy clan, she still felt it her duty to fight these monsters for the safety of her town and her family. But it was when her oldest son Ichigo was nine years old that tragedy struck. The child, a budding candle himself, grew too curious about the strange spirits that he could see and others couldn't. While he and Masaki were walking home by the river, he ran off towards one of those spirits--and Masaki chased after him in a panic. She knew that one of those creatures could easily kill her son, so when it attacked, she defended him with everything she had. And while she did manage to save Ichigo's life, she lost her own in the battle instead.
News of her death traveled back to the Quincy clan. It was a shame to lose such a member with such potential, especially with predictions of Nightfall looming not that far in the future. Unfortunately, normal ressurection was out of the question. Masaki's soul had been lost--devoured by the creature that slew her. But there were other, more desperate and costly ways to bring a person back to life. A branch of the Quincy located in Europe set out to recreate her soul from fifteen years prior, before she was tainted by that daemon and released from the Quincy clan. The endeavor [of which I'm purposely being very vague, but was probably some kind of contract, and I'll likely fill in the gaps later if any RP/CR aligns with it] was seemingly a success. But unbeknownst to the Quincy, it wasn't a likeness of Masaki's soul that they reconstructed, but the real thing--complete with the blight that had merged itself with her. It was only her outer appearance and her memories that resembled the seventeen year old girl.
For obvious reasons, her family and her old branch of the clan were not informed of this "miracle". Taking advantage of the state that they had created Masaki in, this branch of the Quincy clan kept her on a short leash, drilling into her how important it was to remain loyal to the clan and to keep herself safe. She didn't exactly take that manta any better than she did before she died, but they managed to keep her out of trouble for the most part... Until recently, that is.
Now twenty-five years old, Masaki has recently found herself with something of a stalker. A creature that's been seen lurking around her and frequently sensed nearby wherever she happens to be. No one is really sure who or what that thing is, but there are several of the clan that fear it might be a daemon either looking for the soul that they took from it, or looking to exact revenge for the theft. In the interests of everyone, Masaki is sent to Daybreak Academy, where the school has insisted that they can keep her safe and keep tabs on whatever daemons might follow her. And if she happens to get drafted for the fight against Nightfall?... Well, what the Quincy clan doesn't know won't hurt them. And Masaki certainly isn't planning on telling a soul, not if it means she's finally allowed to fight daemons again.
AU PERSONALITY DEVIATION:
Prior to her death, Masaki's personality wasn't all that different from her canon. She was a kind and loving mother, upbeat but a little more mature than in her teenage years. Being a parent has a way of grounding people--even if their sense of humor remains the same. She was happier with her growing family, and willing to do anything for them.
The Masaki entering Daybreak does not have her memories of that family. She doesn't remember what it's like to be surrounded by people she loves, or the happiness that they brought her. She's lonelier--not as much as when she was still freshly grieving over the loss of her parents, but still enough that she feels like there's something missing in her life. It leaves her yearning for a companionship that she can relate to, something more than the rigid structure of the Quincy clan has been able to give her.
That said, without the memories of her family, she's also a little more reckless. She doesn't have anyone to live for other than herself, and she still has that youthful unawareness that her actions could bring consequences to more than just herself. She also doesn't have that grounding that being a parent gave her--that voice of maturity in the back of her mind that tells her when to stop being a playful menace. What she does have instead is an eagerness to meet people, a playful streak a mile wide, and a wistful idealization of what it might be like to connect with others on a deeper level, especially a romantic one.
RACE: Human, plus some traces of blighted-daemon
SECRET SOCIETY: The Quincy clan is a hunter clan comprised entirely of Candles, which makes heavy use of a combination of radiance and rune magic. They were formed by a group of "enlightened humans" as a defense against Hollows--blighted daemons from the Outlands that fed on human souls. The Hollows were already being hunted by another hunter clan called the Shinigami, but the Quincy took issue with how often humans lives were thought of after the fact--if at all. They also resented the Shinigami for returning the Hollows to the Outlands rather than destroying them outright. After all, humans were often murdered by the Hollows, so why should they be given any mercy? Meanwhile, the Shinigami were more concerned that waging outright war against daemons might provoke an actual war against the human world. (Which isn't to say that either group is right, considering they both have a strict non-cooperation rule that involves waiting until the other clan is dead before intervening.)
For her part, Masaki was a model member of the Quincy. She started off on shaky footing with her training, but developed to be one of their more powerful members. Unfortunately, after her incident with the Hollow infection, she was considered 'tainted' and permitted to leave the clan. Fast forward some years, and word of her death has reached the clan. They decide to attempt to ressurrect her from before the incident to make use of her power. Despite the mixed results, they're still intent on keeping her wrapped tightly within the control of the clan this time.
POWERS: Masaki's innate Quincy abilities (her Spirit Weapon and her Blut ability) correlate nicely with Candle powers, while many of the Quincy combat artifacts, such as the Ginto, work well as rune-enhanced magic/equipment. With the addition of the blight-infection and the magic that keeps that infection from spreading, she would have also gained a power-boost, though she's unaware of it. All of this mirrors her canon abilities, so there's not a lot of changes there.
HOUSING: I'd like a room in Aube, please! Any floor is fine, I just want to keep my girls spread out.

CANON INFORMATION
CHARACTER NAME: Masaki Kurosaki (First name, Last name)
CANON: Bleach
HISTORY: Wiki page is here!
STRENGTHS:
- Passionate: One of Masaki's most defining traits is how passionate she is about everything she does. She's the kind of person who relies heavily on her feelings, and those feelings drive her both through her day-to-day activities and through life itself. When she's with her friends, she's boisterous and upbeat; when she's fighting hollows, she's deeply focused and determined to win. Whether serious or casual--whatever Masaki does, she does one hundred percent.
- Caring: But passion itself isn't enough to define her. The source of that passion comes from a deep sense of caring--both for others and for herself. She's not the kind of person who can walk away from someone in need. This gets her into trouble quite a bit with the Ishida family, since their rules state that full-blooded Quincy like her shouldn't be fighting in battles, but she does it anyway. As she tells Ryuuken, to do any less would leave her with regrets that she can't live with. Helping other people in this way, while dangerous, is actually caring for her own well-being. It's helping her face the next day knowing she did everything she could the day before.
- Fearless: There are many examples of Masaki's fearlessness in virtually every scene she appears in. When she jumps into her first Hollow fight to save a Shinigami from being torn apart; when she offers herself as bait to a Hollow that she can't pin down; when she admits her Quincy heritage to a Shinigami, despite knowing he might kill her; when she collapses and nearly dies to a Hollow infection, but stays strong in her belief that someone will save her; when she shields her son's body from a Hollow, even knowing that it would mean her death. You might think that she just doesn't know or understand what fear is, but she does--she just always has something more powerful driving her, and that makes all the difference for her.
FLAWS:
- Reckless: On the flip side of her fearlessness, Masaki can actually be a little reckless. She's quick to rush into action without thinking, and even admits as much to Ryuuken when she talks about how much she admires him. Specifically, she says that she admires how he can think about so many things before making a decision--about himself, about his family, about the Quincy, about the future. For her, she recognizes that she lives very in-the-moment and that her emotions in that moment drive a lot of her actions.
- Reticent: Despite being so externally cheerful and outgoing, Masaki is actually very difficult to get to know on a less superficial level. She's reluctant to talk about things that bother her, even to people that she's close to, and she will actively put up a front to avoid questions if she suspects that someone is trying to pry. For her, it's less an issue of trust and more a worry that she might burden others with her troubles. This is especially true for her children later in life. She's aware that children will often look to their parents for safety and comfort, and she refuses to ever let them see her without a smile on her face.
- Lonely: Losing her parents and then living under the strict Ishida household left Masaki feeling a lack of support or companionship many times. She developed a very deep sense of loneliness, and due to her tendency not to talk about her problems, she had little recourse for easing it. As a result, she tends to attach more quickly to people, even when there are reasons that say she shouldn't. Deep down, she craves the idea of having people close to her that she can care about and rely on.
CANON ABILITIES: A list of Masaki's innate abilities can be found here. She would have also been trained in using Ginto, healing spells, and the Hirenkyaku technique.
